(Source) Cannabis is a safer drug than aspirin and can be used long-term without serious side effects, says a book by a leading Oxford scientist.
The Science of Marijuana, by Dr Leslie Iversen of Oxford University’s department of pharmacology, found many “myths” surrounding marijuana use, such as extreme addictiveness, or links with mental illness or infertility are not supported by science.
He also found cannabis is an inherently “safe drug” which does not
lead to cancer, infertility, brain damage or mental illness.
Legalisation of the drug for medical conditions should be considered, he
says.

Joycelyn Elders, MD, former US Surgeon General, wrote, "The evidence is overwhelming that marijuana can relieve certain types of pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms caused by such illnesses as multiple sclerosis, cancer and AIDS -- or by the harsh drugs sometimes used to treat them. And it can do so with remarkable safety. Indeed, marijuana is less toxic than many of the drugs that physicians prescribe every day." While studies show that therapeutic cannabis aids in pain relief, helps physical conditions to improve and allows the aching population to function with increased capability, the medical marijuana movement
A panel of experts last week released a report concluding that marijuana has therapeutic uses including relieving the pain of neuropathy caused by HIV drugs. The following day, Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) reintroduced legislation to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol.
The report, compiled by the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at the University of California, San Diego, provides an overview of CMCR's scientific studies looking at the medical benefits of cannabis.
CMCR is the result of a bill sponsored by former state Senator John Vasconcellos (D-Santa Clara) – the Medical Marijuana Research Act of 1999 (SB 847) – that commissioned the University of California to establish a scientific research program

America currently finds itself in an economic situation rivaling the Great Depression.
Fortunately, there is an opportunity for the people of California to create a viable industry via the legalization of cannabis. This could generate countless jobs at a time when they are desperately needed. We stand now at a critical juncture, one where we could act to protect one of the last "mom and pop" businesses left in America, or stand by as massive corporations steal yet another industry. AB 390, introduced by Tom Ammiano to the California legislature, along with other initiatives, are

Medical marijuana’s support among voters in New York State is so solid that even a substantial majority of Republicans favor its legalization, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday. The poll found that 71 percent of voters supported medical marijuana, including 55 percent of registered Republicans. The poll numbers seem to confirm others cited by sponsors of the current medical marijuana bill in the Assembly. The poll, on a range of issues before the State Legislature, also found that
Just one day after officially announcing that Cannapalooza

the first-time pot-trade show. Will Cannapalooza move to another

The

Supporters of legalized marijuana announced today that they have gathered about 700,000 signatures for their initiative, virtually guaranteeing voters will see it on the November ballot.
They plan to turn in the petitions today to elections officials in some of the state's major counties, including Los Angeles. Supporters need 433,971 valid signatures to qualify the measure.
The measure’s main proponent, Richard Lee, a highly successful Oakland marijuana entrepreneur, bankrolled a professional signature-gathering effort that was bolstered by volunteers from the state’s hundreds of medical marijuana dispensaries.
“This is a historic first step toward ending cannabis prohibition,” Lee said. “I’ve always
The Michigan Department of Community Health is overwhelmed by the amount of medical marijuana applications it receives daily. It was unexpected. In response to the medical cannabis boom, the department is calling for more regulations that will control the number, scale and safety of growing facilities across Michigan.
How that will happen is anybody’s guess.
“We would like to see more regulations when it comes to growing facilities but we don’t have a specific number on how many there should be,” department spokesman James McCurtis said. “There is no magic number out there.”
Riding on the wave of President Obama’s memo to end DEA interference in states’ medical marijuana laws and an unprecedented response from the media, Oregon NORML’s Cannabis Café opens at 4:20pm on November 13, 2009 at 700 NE Dekum St, Portland, OR 97211.
“The response has been overwhelming,” says Madeline Martinez, Executive Director of Oregon NORML. “We are excited to be able to provide a safe place for patients to medicate that is out of public view within the guidelines of the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act (OMMA).”

Say what you will about prohibitionists —and I say plenty — but, if nothing else, they are consistent. Regardless of the circumstances, they stick to their talking points — no matter how instantly refutable their claims may be.
Case in point. CBS News online today ranpart one of an ongoing debate between recently retired Orange County, California Judge Jim Gray (who many of you recently watched testify before the California Assembly Committee on Public Safetyhere) and prohibitionist profiteer David Evans (who was last heard lying about medical marijuana law reform in New Jersey in a debate with NORML’s Chris Goldstein, which may
Beverly Hills, CA.—November 10, 2009 -- Cannabis has captured the attention of the world. At the same time the Obama administration announced it will no longer seek to prosecute patients and dispensaries of medicinal marijuana, the Los Angeles City Council vows to shut down all over the counter dispensaries.
The international media capitalized on the "Stiletto Stoners" phenomenon fascinated by women’s use of cannabis. Celebrities like Michael Phelps and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes who were cited for marijuana possession are putting a new face on this controversial plant.
Riding that wave, the national office of NORML, the National Organization
